Challenge

Committed to deploying a UMTS cellular network on an aggressive timeframe, SaskTel called in the experts at Comtech. Typical deployments follow a general order, where each step depends on the achievement of the first - simply put, it's like putting on socks before you put on shoes. Planning must precede Engineering, which must precede Structural Analysis, which must precede Structural Modification, which must precede Equipment Installation, which must precede Site Integration.

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to operate that way, so both conceptual and technological advancements were required to perform multiple steps concurrently as opposed to sequentially.



How Comtech Helped

Comtech developed a technical methodology that could be used to deploy an integrated, optimized cellular network in less than half the time, and at a similar cost, to the standard process. The configurations and methods tested were above and beyond routine engineering and installation practices.

More specifically, Comtech:

  • Found ways to decrease structural tower loading concurrently with tower analysis through the development of new methods, products and application of technologies
  • Defined and tested new standards and procedures as a result of these unknown configurations and methodologies
  • Performed each of these in concert with escalated network design and performance expectation.

In essence, Comtech furthered the state of the industry methodology for Network creation.



Outcome

Comtech's innovation in engineering principles included the means and capability to reduce the structural tower loading beyond industry accepted practice through the application of custom cabling arrangements, development of specific products outside their original use, and innovative use of combiner technology, due to necessity of time constraint and necessity of concurrent initiatives to replace consecutive initiatives.

The new arrangement - completed on-time and on-budget - offered no degradation of acceptable performance. The result, while subtle in distinction, represented an advancement to the body of knowledge of network build-out.
